Cleaning in the Yard

The Maids • May 01, 2013

When you think of house cleaning, you generally think about what's going on inside the house. You're much less likely to think about what's going on in your yard, but often, that needs cleaning, too!

Of course, the kind of cleaning you do in your yard is different from your house, but not as different as you might think.

Here are a few tips to get you started on the outside:

Step #1: Pick up the random things. It might be the kids toys, random tools, or yard equipment that got left where it was. The first thing to do is get all of these things out of the way. Broken lawnmower pushed into the corner of the yard? Probably time to let that go, too.

Step #2: Work from the top down. Just like dusting in your home, you want to work from top to bottom on the outside of your house, too. Start with the gutters: if you use a power washer, this is a fairly easy (if time consuming) task. Move onto the siding next, and then if it needs it, your deck or porch for an all over clean.

Step #3: Wash the windows, but wait for a cloudy day. If you wash windows on a sunny day, you'll end up with water spots as the sun dries the windows while you're still cleaning. Wait until dusk or until the clouds come out to take on the windows with a vinegar and water solution and a microfiber cloth or squeegee.

Step #4: Clean out the weeds. Looking unsightly is just what weeds do, and they do a great job cluttering up the plants you actually love. As part of your outdoor spring initiative, get rid of the weeds.

Step #5: Maintain. Just like inside, the outside needs maintenance, too. Encourage everyone to clean up their belongings when they're finished and weed about once a month to keep your yard looking great!
