How to Keep Your Home Library Neatly Organized

The Maids • Jun 05, 2012

It is nice when you can dedicate one of the rooms in your house to become a home library. But this is not an option for many people, who have less space to work with. In such cases, book lovers need to find or create space to store their books, like through bookcases and shelves placed in several rooms. Whichever option you choose, there are many ways to organize your shelving systems, allowing you to accommodate as many books as you have. The following are a few tips to help you keep your home library fun and orderly. If you want help with organization or even housekeeping in general, The Maids of New London in Hamden, CT can help.

Librarything.com

Any tech savvy person will appreciate this tool. This platform keeps a record of all your books, and even informs you what shelf they are on, allowing you to keep track of the books you have read, intend to read, and those that you have lent out to friends. Its layout is very simple to use. Once you enter all the details of your book, it brings up a photo next to the title, making it easy to find a specific one while scrolling through the list of your books.

Organizing Alphabetically

This is the most common way to organize books, though it is very time consuming. You simply organize your shelves the same way big libraries do it: alphabetized by title or author’s last name. When using this method, it is important to note that “a” and “the” do not count.

Organizing By Color

This is a great project for homes with kids, since you can have fun together as you organize your books. The best way to start is by piling books with the same color, after which you can move from one colored pile to the next sorting books into your preferred genres. You can then alphabetize within each genre or pile to make it much easier to find a specific book. When sorting in genres, make sure that you keep the order with all piles. For instance,

  • Black: biographies, fiction, history
  • Red: biographies, fiction, history

It is important to label your books with your name, address, and number, and to keep a journal for writing down the books that you have lent out. Labeling helps your friends remember whose book they borrowed.
